Dr. L. P. Lewis accepted his calling into the ministry in 1985, and was licensed and ordained by Pastor Emeritus Dr. J. Alfred Smith, Sr. At the Allen Temple Baptist Church, Dr. Lewis has served as Executive Assistant to the Pastor and Co-Pastor; as Dean of the Leadership Institute at Allen Temple, Director, Ministers-in-Training Program, and Supervisor for field education students attending the American Baptist Seminary of the West. Dr. Lewis has served as interim pastor at Canaan Christian Covenant Community Baptist Church, and Bethany Baptist Church, both located in Oakland, CA.
Dr. Lewis has also served as an Adjunct Professor, American Baptist Seminary of the West, Berkeley, CA and has lectured at San Francisco State University, San Francisco, CA, on Urban Planning and Development; at the University of California, Berkeley, CA, on Social Planning and Implementation; and Stanford University, Palo Alto, CA on the Elderly and Aging in Place program. Presently, Dr. Lewis works with the Allen Temple Ministers-in-Training Ministry. At the Leadership Institute at Allen Temple, he serves as a member of the Board of Directors, and teaches African American Preaching at the Leadership Institute at Allen Temple where is currently serving as Interim Chancellor.
Dr. Lewis graduated from San Francisco City College, San Francisco, CA, AA Degree; San Francisco State University, B.A., San Francisco, CA; the American Baptist seminary of the West, Berkeley, CA, Master of Divinity Degree; and the San Francisco Theological Seminary San Anselmo, CA, Doctor of Ministry Degree.
In the secular world, Dr. Lewis has been a servant of the people through various significant management and executive positions with federal, state and local governments. He held the position of Assistant Area Director of the India Basin and Hunters Point Redevelopment Projects. Dr. Lewis also held the positions of Executive Director of the San Francisco Model Cities Agency; and Director of Asset Management Division at the Department of Housing and Urban Development.
