ATBC May 17 Health Emphasis

Getting older doesn’t mean what it used to. For many, it is a phase of life where interests, goals, and dreams can get a new or second start. Today, aging is about eliminating outdated perceptions and living the way that suits you best. So it is in that spirit that we recognize May as Older Americans Month (OAM)!

Since 1963, OAM has been a time to celebrate older Americans, their stories, and their contributions. Led by the Administration for Community Living, the annual observance offers a special opportunity to learn about, support, and recognize our nation’s older citizens. This year’s theme, “Age Out Loud,” emphasizes the ways older adults are living their lives with boldness, confidence, and passion while serving as an inspiration to people of all ages.

We at Allen Temple recognize the enormous sacrifice made by our elders—past and present—to provide the quality of life we enjoy in our families and in this faith community. We will use OAM 2017 to focus on how the elders among us are redefining aging—through work or family interests, by taking charge of their health and staying independent for as long as possible, and through their community and advocacy efforts. We can also use this opportunity to learn how we can best support and learn from our beloved senior family and church members.

Throughout the month, we will host activities and share information designed to highlight local programs, resources, stories, etc. that focus on our friends, family members and fellow church members. As you read/hear about the wonderful folks among us, we encourage you to get involved by supporting those activities which give back to those who have given so much to us.

Allen Temple is committed to supporting older adults as they take charge of their health, explore new opportunities and activities, and focus on independence. Join us as we celebrate our seniors...speak for and with them on those issues that matter to ensure the quality of life for which they have worked and deserve. Let’s all remember to hold up the #AgeOutLoud banner this May!
